How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Dental patient getting nitrous oxide

Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is breathed through a small, comfortable nosepiece for the duration of your child’s visit. While they’ll remain awake, they’ll feel very relaxed and maybe a bit drowsy. Some children get a tingly feeling in their hands and feet or say that they feel “floaty.”

Our entire team has the experience and training to safely administer nitrous oxide and will closely monitor your child’s breathing and heart rate throughout their visit. Since nitrous oxide starts working immediately and also wears off right away, children are back to normal after their appointment and can resume their normal activities for the day.

Also, while the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide as safe and effective, some children can get an upset stomach. To prevent this, we recommend providing a light meal or snack (e.g. applesauce, soup, crackers, etc.) about two hours before their visit, with no more food or liquids until after their appointment.

Is Nitrous Oxide Right For Your Child?

Nitrous oxide has been used for many decades on millions of pediatric dental patients. While any child who feels anxious can benefit from it, it’s particularly useful for the following types of patients:

  • Children who have a strong gag reflex.
  • Children who have a hard time being fully numbed with local anesthesia or who have a fear of needles.
  • As a special needs dentist in Fitchburg, Dr. Leung also recommends nitrous oxide for any child with specific healthcare needs. It’s often particularly helpful for a wide range of developmental, behavioral, physical, or other issues.

What Kind of Procedures Is Nitrous Oxide Good For?

Sedation pediatric dentistry in Fitchburg is perfect for extractions or any type of longer visit (e.g. dental crowns or getting multiple fillings at a time). It makes it much easier for kids to tolerate sitting still for a long appointment and also improves our ability to communicate with them. This helps their visit run smoothly and makes dental work a more positive experience overall. Not to mention that it can go a long way towards helping kids avoid dental phobia as they get older.

If your child has struggled at dental visits in the past, feel free to schedule a consultation. With many years of experience, our warm, friendly team can help them achieve great dental health, without fear or anxiety.
